I did a couple of articles earlier in the year about which apps I was using on my iPod. I thought I would update those posts with a single post with a list of all the additional apps I have loaded.

My choice of apps as you will see is influenced by the fact that I live in France but I frequently travel to UK, so I have a number of apps in a ‘Travel’ folder specifically for UK travel these then don’t take up too much space on the screen.

One of my jobs over Christmas will be to regroup my various apps in to more sensible grouping, writing this post made me realise that I need to do that task sooner rather than later or not at all!

Amazon – This app lets you scan barcodes and photograph items that it then matches with the Amazon store, a bit of a novelty really. I’ve not bought anything using the app yet!

Battery Master Free – a simple battery battery level indicator, the iPhone 4 has a simple indicator in the status bar showing the percentage, something that hasn’t been shared with the iPod Touch yet.

BBC News – Essential for keeping up to date with World and UK news and it’s free

Blogger – Google at last brought out an official app to support mobile blogging on their Blogger network.

Camera + – A much improved camera app compared to the standard one, this one lets you do some limited editing and adjustments to the pictures before you save them, share them by email, Twitter or Facebook. Sadly the resolution of the iPod Touch camera is a little limited, I don’t use it often compared to my small compact. And for £0.59 this is a must have app.

Dropbox – I’ve been a Dropbox user now for well over a year, can’t be without it so it makes sense to have it on my Touch as well. It’s a great way to always have your files, photos etc available on all your devices and PC’s

Facebook – Easy to use, although I would like to see them include some extra features in to this, such as managing friends.

Facebook Messenger – For accessing your Facebook messages a bit easier than using the full app.

Facetime – A great video conferencing tool, works great, better than Skype in most respects. It’s simple to use and great on the Touch because I can go walking around the house with it and show family and friends what is going on here. Free to download and free to use.

Flickr – Access your Flickr account to share and view pictures

FlightRadar24 – I’ve used this for tracking incoming flights, I lurk in a nearby McDonalds and then get to the airport just on time… saves on airport parking fees

Flipboard – This is a great app, I’ve found myself using this one more and more, it presents various feeds (Twitter, Facebook, News etc) in a magazine type format.

Find My Friends – a free app from Apple for tracking where your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch carrying friends are.

Find iPhone – Similar idea but more use as a security measure should you lose your iPhone

Fon Maps – This application is supposed to indicate the location of FON WiFi hotspots, but it doesn’t appear to work – Failure

Foursquare – A bit of fun check in at places and see who is there or if any of your friends have been there before you.

Google+ – The mobile app for Google+ although it is a little limited what it can do.

Google Mobile App – Free from Google it features all the usual Google apps such as Gmail, Calendar, Search engine, Buzz etc.

Heart Pal – I use this free app to track my blood pressure, it shows the highs and lows and an average figure too. I have a BP monitor that I take the readings with and then feed these in to the app.

HP48GX – A great simulation of an expensive HP Scientific Calculator. I have downloaded the manual for the real calculator and it works just the same!

iBooks – Apples own Kindle app.

iSpy Analytics – I use this for checking my Google Analytics stats which tracks visitor on lots of different blogs I write on and maintain including this one

Kindle – lets you read your Kindle downloads on your iPod touch useful if you don’t have a Kindle… yet! I haven’t really used this one much yet, but text is very clear on the iPod, although naturally the screen is some what smaller than a Kindle.

Light Meter – I have a film camera without a light meter, this is is great for doing a light measurement, daft I know! But the app is free and the light meter I used to use no longer works.

Meteo France – Weather forecasts and warnings here in France

Met Office Weather – UK weather forecasts

Moleskine – One I’ve not really had a use for… but it does include the catalogue within the app.

Multiconvert – There are dozens of conversion apps in the app store, this one is free and does most things and the interface is quite pleasing and easy to use.

Photosynth – Microsoft have come up with an excellent photo app… Microsoft and excellent in the same sentence!!! This allows you to put together great panorama pictures that you can scroll around, it will even do full 360 degree pictures too.

Rail Europe – For train time tables and fares in Europe but for some reason the prices are all displayed in US$ not Euros

Remote – This app lets me control iTunes on my iMac from anywhere in the house. More importantly it also lets me control my Apple TV with more options than the standard remote control.

Road Trip – I use this to record how much fuel we are using in the car and for our oil fired boiler!! Lots of apps available, after a lot of false starts I discovered the free Lite version of this which can cope with my requirements of entering things in litres, paying in Euros and still getting a Miles Per Gallon figure. Having satisfied myself that this app could handle my slightly unusual requirements I bought the paid version which can handle more vehicles including the boiler!! Which is just a bonus really.

Skype – Like the desktop app it lets you have voice calls and now video calls with other Skype users on PC’s, Macs, Linux platforms.

SNCF Direct – French train time tables

Soundtracking – a great app for sharing your music tastes on Twitter and Facebook, easy to use. Can also identify music you are listening to on the radio or TV etc.

Speedtest – a simple tester for your broadband speed, both upload and download speeds. Useful for comparing over time or when out and about via Wifi

Starbucks – Starbucks now offer free Wifi in their coffee shops, this is useful if you are planning a day out and you need Wifi access

The Radio – a great free app for streaming UK radio stations to your iPod<del></del>

The Trainline – UK rail time tables great for trip planning

Tomorrow – a simple To-Do list, although I’ve not really been using it recently preferring my Filofax

Traffic – Live traffic information in France, but it also covers UK and other European countries

Tumblr – I’ve only just started my Tumblr blog, but the app on the Touch makes it very easy to add posts on the move and adding pictures and quotes etc.

TV Guide – A free UK TV programme guide, a miniature Radio Times if you like.. and it’s free

Twitter – Just the standard Twitter app, it works for me. I’m currently still using the older version not the current version because of changes they have made in the new version that I wasn’t happy about. I will wait to see what updates they add in the coming weeks before swapping to a newer version. One thing that even the new version doesn’t include is management of new follower requests.

Week Cal – The standard calendar in iOS only has Day view or Month View, or a list view. Why they missed out the most obvious view… Week View I don’t know. This one is a paid for app, but it seems to do the job ok, although I still use my Filofax for everything calendar related!!! With IOS5 you now get a week view when you turn your device in to landscape mode. But Week Cal does have more detail in it. But I’m still using my Filofax more than this sort of app. I also only now use iCal and iCloud to sync things.

Wifi Finder – I’m still trying this one out, it seems to display plenty of free WiFi access points around here, I need to check these out.

Wikipedia – a great free app for looking up the answers to quiz questions, or the details of an actor whilst you are watching TV!

WordPress – Useful for updating WordPress Blogs like this one, you can edit posts and create new ones.

XE Currency – Exchange rates, updates every 10 mins or faster if you wish.

Don’t hesitate to ask me for more information if you need it on any of the apps listed.

I’m very pleased to welcome Sandra a ‘Philofaxy friend’ of mine from the USA to write this guest post as part of the Philofaxy All Stars Tour. Sandra also writes her own blog – Filofanatic

So in August I was browsing the Internet and stumbled on an announcement about Hewlett Packard selling off their inventory of Touchpads. These tablets mimic an iPad but with less coolness and a smaller number of applications are available. Well, I am so not cool and simply wanted something to serve as an e-reader. I was contemplating a laptop or a Kindle, but the price point of these ($99 for 16GB storage, $149 for 32GB) made me think: Must. Buy. Now.

I hurriedly bought two of them (my DH is so lucky) and told a few friends to jump in on this opportunity as well. Thus far the Touchpad has been a terrific alternative to checking my email on my Blackberry or surfing the Internet on my poor, old Dell desktop. The Touchpad has a small number of apps available in comparison to the iPad, but it serves my needs well. I use the Kindle app to download books, the Facebook app to avoid the real work I have to do, the AuctionMate app to scope out Filofax deals, and the Accuweather app to see just how flippin’ cold it will be here today. I use the NPR, Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post Reader to catch up on things. And, there is Feed Reader, too! Yippee!

Another neat-o feature is this: all of my personal email addresses are consolidated into one place. Love it! And logging in and catching up on electronic reading is even more pleasant because I can tote the Touchpad anywhere around the home (or where WiFi is available).I can open Google Calendar easily (use it for meal planning and tracking daily routines) as well and coordinate all that is my crazy life. My dear husband is trying out Google Calendar, and when I update and add information and such to my tablet and it shoots reminders and updates to his smartphone. This is brilliant. And it beats me dictating reminders to him for to jot down in his notebook. Nice!

The TouchPad looks like an iPad so I’ve been told. I haven’t seen one up close and personal, so take their word for it. The front-facing camera isn’t worth using, truly, but I can use the messaging option to have face-to-convos with others that have a webcam. And while I have used Skype with the Touchpad to join Philofaxy chats, a microphone is needed for clarity and better sound quality. In addition to reading like a crazed teacher, the tablet is also nice for listening to Pandora Internet radio anywhere throughout the home and for playing Angry Birds (!). There are some other apps I like also, and the kids love to play games on it the rare moments I let them play with it. This tablet is not a work tool at all—but it is a fun toy with more capabilities than I have described. Score one for me!

Thanks for reading! And thank you Sandra, I’ve yet to jump in to the Tablet arena, but I have to admit I am tempted!

I’ve never written about a film before or my former interest in Formula 1 motorsport. So I’m breaking the silence with this post I suppose.

I sat and watched Senna the film last night, it focused on his time in Formula 1 or should I say his short time in F1 when he was tragically killed on 1 May 1994. That day is etched in my memory more so than any other race I suppose.

I thought the film was very good, and it’s a must watch for any F1 fan, past and present. It sets the scene as to how F1 got to where it is today in a lot of ways: safety, politics, money and the sport in general.

It is quite clear from the film that Senna shouldn’t have been in the car that day, although he was on pole, he was in a car that was that had very unstable handling. This was the first season without all the electronic aids that the previous years car had had (traction control, suspension, gearbox, differential etc) The Williams FW16 looked quite a handful to drive, even with the skill of Senna behind the wheel. The previous day their had been the death of Roland Ratzenberger in qualifying, his death was the first in F1 for over 12 years. This had quite an impact on his mental state.

When you look at film, there are a few things that were obvious that were not right, the safety car which had only been introduced the previous year was just an Opel Ascona/Vauxhall Cavalier which was far too slow to be leading a pack of F1 cars. An accident occurred at the start of the race and the safety car came our straight away for five laps and his crash occurred on lap 7.

A lot of theories have been given as to the causes of the crash and I suspect we will never know the true cause although a lot of plausible reasons have been given.

I no longer devote any time to watching or following F1, I got tired of them constantly changing the rules and the designers bending the rules but not having any points deducted from their totals. I don’t believe it’s possible to compare the performance of one driver against another in quite the same way as they used to be. The drivers speak in ‘sound-bites’, with so much money involved everything is so scripted. The restrictions on technology development in my opinion no longer make it the pinnacle of motor-sport. Senna and Prost didn’t need ‘drag reduction systems, and KERS to pass each other.

See the film and you might see what we are missing in F1 today.

Anybody who has a blog or a website loves to know how many people visit their site. In early days of the web these took the form of simple counters, but they don’t really tell you a lot of information about your visitors.

I’ve been using Google Analytics for about 5 years or so now, and it’s very easy to implement on your site or blog and once set up you just look at the reports and data that Google collects on your behalf from your visitors from a cookie. It is a free to use service, I have it set up on a lot of sites, so I can look at them all at the same time.

To add Google Analytics to your site you need to sign up for an account, supply the address of the site you wish to monitor. This will then create a unique ID for your site and the code to use.

In the case of a website you need to add the code to each page, or on a blog add the code to a widget in the sidebar.

On Blogger it’s just a case of adding the the id on the Settings page, Basic, Google Analytics Web Property ID UA-10089870-1

In WordPress blogs you can add a plug-in (Google Analyticator) and just set it up with your id (UA-10089870-1) this will then add the required code to the blog template so that all pages will have the required code for Google Analytics.

Once set up you can check on Google Analytics to make sure that the code is set up correctly and it’s waiting to collect data.

Then it is just a case of letting it run for a few weeks/months before you can start to draw any conclusions.

I’ve been using Google Analytics on Philofaxy for over 2 years now and with that much data it has been possible to see which days are quiet days on the blog, which type of posts get read most, which sites are sending you the best readers. etc etc.

One of the things I use quite a bit on Google Analytics is the ability to add notes to the time line. So if you make a change to the blog or website you can add a note about that change and then in a few months time you can see if that change has had an impact in the number of visitors or pageviews. When we added the ‘you might also like’ related posts feature to Philofaxy our page views per visit had a step increase of about 25% so it was a worthwhile change.

Google Analytics won’t bring you more visitors, but it will help you focus your content on what brings back visitors for ‘more’

If you have any questions, pop them in the comments and I will try to respond.

My battery on my GO 720 doesn’t hold it’s charge for very long (10 mins!) Can you please tell me what you charge to replace the battery? The device is no longer in warranty and I suspect the battery might be excluded from that anyway.

Response Sophia (UK) 14/03/2011 06.41 AM

The reference number for your query is 110313-003597.

Thank you for taking the time to contact TomTom Customer Support. My name is Sophia and we are always happy to help.

Let me assure you that, I will provide you with accurate information.

I understand that, your TomTom device battery does not hold charge and would like to replace the battery and wants to know as what is the charge for replacing the battery of your TomTom device.

I would like to inform you that, we do not replace or sell battery of TomTom devices. As you have stated that, your TomTom device battery does not hold charge, we can book your TomTom device for repair.

Before booking your TomTom device for repair, I would request you to please go through the email details provided below:

When your device battery does not hold charge, it is necessary to follow a procedure to reset the device battery. We would also like to add that it is very normal that the device needs to be reset occasionally.

In most cases, if the device does not turn on at all, it usually means that battery has run down completely.

When you switch your TomTom device off, it still consumes some of the power of the battery even though it is switched off, so after a few days, you will find that the battery has drained. After this point, you will need to fully charge and reset your device.

To reset your TomTom device do the following:

• Connect unit to the computer
• Make sure that the green light is illuminated on the TomTom device
• Leave your TomTom on charge for 4 hours
• Please visit http://www.tomtom.com/6965 and follow the reset instructions

Press the power button for 10 seconds. The unit should then come on. If not, then press the reset button, put it on charge for 2 – 3 hours, press the reset button again then press the power button.

Try charging with an alternate charger and check whether your device holds charge.

If your unit does not switch on when you have tried all this, then you have a hardware fault and it will need to be repaired and we will require the Serial No. (located on the base of the unit by the barcode).

Should you need to contact TomTom Customer Support, please call us and quote the following reference:- 110313-003597

Please also state :-
- Does the TomTom switch on when you connect it to your Computer?
- Does the Green light come on when you connect the TomTom to Windscreen Dock and In car charger?
- Does the TomTom switch on when you remove the SD card? (where applicable)
- Does the unit smell burnt?

If the device does switch on, please state how long the battery lasted for when you switched the device on and left it running on its own power.

Please can you confirm what your Serial Number is?

It can be found on the base of the device, by the barcode on the white sticker. It usually begins with ‘C_No’ or ‘S/N’ followed by one or two letters and a series of nine or ten more digits. E.g. ‘V12345A67890′ or ‘RB1234I6789′.

POP: Please provide me with the proof of purchase for your device.

Updated address and telephone number: I would request you to provide me with the updated address details and telephone number.

Let me know the progress made.

I will be waiting for your reply.

Thank you for your valuable time and for giving me an opportunity to assist you.

The unit serial number is M61497A02953

I have performed the reset procedure twice in the last couple of days in both cases followed by a four hour charge.

The unit never has a problem starting and always shows the green light to show it’s charging. But once disconnected from the power source (Car or PC) the battery indicator drops quite quickly. The best battery life with bluetooth and FM transmitter turned off is about 20 minutes.

The unit is outside of warranty. It was purchased in 2008:

All I need from you really is an estimate of the cost of repair (battery replacement) if it’s not economical to repair the unit, I will either continue to use it but only powered from the car, or consider replacing it with another sat nav, possibly not a TomTom.

Thank you
Regards
Steve

What would the typical cost of a battery replacement be? That is all I ask…

Customer Steve Morton 21/03/2011 07.41 AM

So if I decided to go ahead with this repair and send you the unit, because you are not willing to tell me the estimated cost of the replacement battery until you have seen the unit. Can I ask where will I have to post the unit to, so I can get some idea of the cost of the postage that I will incur, otherwise I might be spending a lot on postage then I find out the cost of the repair is uneconomical and I will have wasted this money on the postage that I could have put to buying a new Sat Nav.

Thank You.

And surprise surprise they closed the query… this I’m afraid is typical of Tom Tom customer service. I will be looking elsewhere next time I buy a Sat Nav,

Their unhelpful customer service raised it’s ugly head again this weekend when I was trying to order a Map Update subscription. I kept getting a very unhelpful error message of ‘Internal ServerError’ I emailed them and sent them screen shots and lots of stuff, not a word from them in four days. I solved the problem myself in the end.

I wonder how many ordinary folk just don’t bother to ever update their Tom Tom’s because of issues like this or they just chuck them in the bin.

I had never met the man himself, but his attention to detail that people have been talking about today in various tributes certainly came across.

If you have any iOS device, just take a look at the screen detail under a magnifier and you will see what I mean, the detail and the colour gradients are very delicately done, yet most people will not notice them at normal viewing distances.

The design of the packaging of Apple products goes well beyond other items I’ve ever bought in the last 10 years, they are an art form in themselves, you don’t want to dispose of the cardboard box because it’s so nicely designed.

His showmanship at the various keynote speeches I’ve watched over the last few years have always been fun to watch. His presence on stage will be sadly missed. I can’t quite see Tim Cook doing a ‘Just one more thing‘ in quite the same style as Steve Jobs always did.

The most detailed tribute to Steve Jobs I found was broadcast live more or less by Leo Leporte on Twit TV, they went from the show they were broadcasting at the time straight in to covering the death of Steve Jobs and discussing his impact on the world of IT over the last few years.

Steve Jobs was listed on a large number of Apple Patents, the New York Times listed them all.

Life is so precious and cancer robs us of some of the nicer people there are in the world, often well before they are old. I’m donating money to a Cancer Charity to fight this terrible disease, I hope you are too.

I have a very vague recollection of going to see the film ‘Hard Day’s Night’ at the cinema, which would have been about 1964, I was only 5 then hence why I say vague. I was born ‘across the water’ in Bebington, which is the other side of the River Mersey from Liverpool, where the Beatles thing all sort of exploded during my childhood, although I don’t remember much about them apart from their appearances on TV.

The first album I can recall buying was by Simon and Garfunkel, although I’m not sure why I bought it, may be it was to impress a girl I knew at the time! Anyway my musical interest sort of laid dormant for a couple of years or so. Then a friend of mine introduced me to the guitar, he was in a band and I went along to see them play a few times. I bought my own guitar and tried to learn how to play it, not very well I may add.

One of the first guitar pieces my friend Peter tried to teach me was the lead guitar from a Steely Dan track off of their album ‘Can’t Buy a Thrill’ called ‘Reelin’ in the Years’ which I feel I’m doing now! I literally tied up my fingers in knots learning that one track. I can just about remember how to play some of it still, but not at the speed required!

Oh I wish I had access to You Tube back then:

Anyway I digress.

I got to quite like Steely Dan, their music seemed to appeal to my taste, the lyrics never made a lot of sense, but that was by the by. I bought their albums all through the 1970’s on LP and enjoyed every one. I was listening to the best session musicians in the business, may be I should have started with something that was less of a challenge, but it was the tuneful guitar that appealed to me. It wasn’t just a loud noise if you listened for long enough you could hear and isolate each player’s contribution.

My love of Steely Dan caused me to expand my list of artists and there was rarely a weekend when I wasn’t hanging out in some of the back room second-hand record shops in Birkenhead or the music stores in Liverpool, which included a small and new shop called ‘Virgin Records’. They somehow seemed to have LP’s cheaper than the normal stores I went to. What I didn’t know at the time was they imported the LP’s from other countries avoiding tax on them and so they were always cheaper in there.

I recall buying Supertramp – Crime of the Century in Virgin Records and noticing when I got home that the sleeve notes where in Spanish, which I couldn’t read, but I wasn’t worried I loved the music on that album. Listening to a crackly LP track trying to make out what the train announcer says on ‘Ruby’ which I never managed until I got the album on CD years later!

My collection slowly grew, I also started to go and see bands live in Liverpool when I was about 14 or 15, dashing back down through the city when the concert had finished to catch the last boat across to Birkenhead. I enjoyed the listening to bands playing live and seeing how the concerts where technically organised.

As I approached 16 I was still not sure what I wanted to do for a career, but radio or electronics engineering looked interesting, so at 16 I left home to get a job as a trainee radio technician in Milton Keynes. My record collection was initially left at home until I moved to different accommodation and then it joined me again and started it’s growth again.

Move on a few years to about 1985 and the music CD had hit the scenes and the players had become affordable. I had by this time got about 200 LPs in my record collection. I would have loved to have just replaced them all over night with CD versions, but I couldn’t afford to do that and also not all my LP’s where available on CD at that point in time.

So I started going through my collection picking out the albums I really liked gradually replacing them with CD’s. By this time I had also got a better hi-fi system to listen to my music as well. I still had my guitar but I wasn’t playing it as often by this time, I got more enjoyment from listening to professional players.

It wasn’t however until the advent of iTunes that I started to notice that what I was listening to on a regular basis had started to form a pattern. So I retraced my steps and started to look at the release dates of some of my favourite albums. And here they are:

Can’t Buy a Thrill – Steely Dan – 1972

Exile on Main Street – Rolling Stones – 1972

Dark Side of the Moon – Pink Floyd – 1973

Sheet Music – 10cc – 1973

Selling England by the Pound – Genesis – 1973

Buckingham Nicks – Buckingham Nicks – 1973

Band on the Run – Wings – 1973

Tubular Bells – Mike Oldfield – 1973

Countdown to Ecstasy – Steely Dan – 1973

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road – Elton John – 1973

Sheer Heart Attack– Queen – 1974

Pretzel Logic – Steely Dan – 1974

The Impossible Dream – The Sensational Alex Harvey Band – 1974

Crime of the Century – Supertramp – 1974

Fleetwood Mac – Fleetwood Mac – 1975

The Best of the Dobbie Brothers – Dobbie Brothers – 1976

Aja – Steely Dan – 1977

Rumours – Fleetwood Mac – 1977

Yes you have by now spotted the large concentration of albums from 1973! As I moved in to the 1980’s, so my musical taste did expand beyond the later albums of some of these groups and singers, but not all of them. But I attribute these albums as being the foundations of my taste in music.

Music plays quite a big part of my life; I must listen to more hours of music in a day than I watch TV in a week these days. You can follow what I’m listening to on my Last.FM account. http://www.last.fm/user/Temps-Perdu

I would like to introduce you to Caribbean Princess a public health doctor and epidemiologist currently living in the UK. I was very pleased to accept her offer of a Philofaxy ‘All Stars’ Guest Post for my blog, which as you know tends to be very ‘tech-centric’.

CP, as she is affectionately known within the Philofaxy circles writes on her own blog Musings of a Caribbean Princess, which I recommend you visit, it’s not all hand bags and Filofax organisers.

Let’s face it. Heath is important. We all want to be in good health. Yet we know that men are least likely to see a doctor even when they are worried about their health. A few years ago this became personal. My dear father was diagnosed with prostate cancer and it changed my world. Here was someone with two medical offspring, (myself and my younger brother), who had been a Biology teacher and who knew all about the signs and symptoms of prostate cancer. But he said nothing to any of us, not me or my mum or even my brother. He kept it quiet. And he was lucky that his silence did not end up killing him. So for this post, I want to just share a brief overview of prostate cancer (and other prostate problems) and the red flags that you should be on the lookout for, those things that should indicate that you NEED TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY.

So what is the prostate?

The prostate is a small, walnut sized organ, found below the bladder and surrounding the urethra (tube that carries urine away from the bladder). Its function is to make a fluid that becomes part of semen (which is the fluid that contains sperm).

There are many different types of prostate problems which can all present with similar signs and symptoms. Therefore having these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean that you have prostate cancer. However it should indicate to you that you should visit your doctor for further tests and clarification.

Signs of prostate problems include:

Frequent urge to urinate (referred to frequency)

Blood in the urine or semen

Painful or burning urination

Difficulty in urinating or inability to urinate

Difficulty in having an erection

Reduced flow when urinating

Pain or stiffness in the lower back

Types of Prostate problems include

Prostatitis- This may be acute or chronic. Acute prostatitis almost always results from an infection, usually from bacteria. The person will suffer with fever, chills, lower back pain and difficulty in urinating. Antibiotics will help clear the infection. Chronic prostatitis refers to when the infection keeps on coming back again and again although sometimes it occurs without infection. It is more difficult to manage although antibiotics can also help. In a lot of cases, the person has no symptoms or symptoms are less severe than with the acute type.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). This simply means that the prostate is enlarged and is common in older men. A rectal examination can be used to diagnose this. BPH does not lead to cancer.

Prostate cancer. This is one of the most common cancers in men and is more common in black men. There is still a lot of controversy about whether or not men should be screened for prostate cancer due to the lack of an effective screening test. In the early stages, it can cause no symptoms before leading to the symptoms I described earlier. It is important therefore for you to see your doctor if you have these symptoms especially if you have any risk factors for the disease (family history, African American/ Caribbean descent).

I hope you have found this information useful. Please remember that it is always better to deal with problems sooner than later. My Dad was lucky but no one should play Russian roulette with their health.

Take care

Choosing a camera these days is quite a difficult task, not because your choice is restricted, but because the number of models for sale is very extensive, terms of price and quality. These days even mobile phones have cameras of quite reasonable specification compared to the first digital consumer cameras of say 10-12 years ago. Over the years specifications have improved and the prices have come down.

When choosing a camera we will all have a price band in mind, what ever that price band is there will be quite a range of cameras to choose from.

So let’s run through the different types of cameras and look at the pros and cons of them.

Digital Compact Cameras
These are very popular these days, most people have one in their bag that they will carry with them everywhere. They offer the ability to capture images in most situations. They will have a zoom lens, which might have a limited range, but all the same it will let you compose the picture. Whilst they are cheap the picture quality reflects their price in some ways. The image sensor will be quite small, yet might still boast quite a high resolution. This is fine if you have apply light, but under low light conditions picture noise will increase due to the small image sensor size. The built in flash will be fine for simple portraits but will not have enough power to illuminate a large group of people. The lens is integrated in to the camera, so whatever lens is fitted to the compact camera, you can not change it.

Nearly all compacts these days use the rear screen as the viewfinder. For me this is their main stumbling block. This screen is often difficult to see under outdoor sunny conditions. People will often be seen taking pictures with their arms outstretched holding the camera at arms length. To me this is the most un-natural stance to use when taking a picture; it is not the best stance for holding the camera as steady as possible when taking the picture.

Bridge Cameras
These are a further development of the compact camera. The main difference is that they have an electronic viewfinder in addition to the display on the back of the camera; you can use either to compose your picture. But the electronic viewfinder does allow you to hold the camera to your eye and hold the camera a lot steadier. The disadvantage of this sort of viewfinder is the resolution of the viewfinder can be quite low, and sometimes there’s a slight delay or lag between what you are seeing in the viewfinder and what is happening in front of the camera.

Bridge cameras often have more accurate controls for the light metering and the auto focusing of the camera lens. But the camera lens is not interchangeable, just like the compact camera.

Digital Single Lens Reflex Cameras (DSLR)
DSLR’s have advanced considerably in the last 10 years, they were only affordable by professionals, but they are now quite affordable now. DSLR’s offer optical viewfinders, and the image you see is through the camera lens, so you can see exactly what will appear in the image file. The lenses are interchangeable. The metering systems are very accurate and the auto-focusing tends to be multi point and very fast. The main difference though compared to the other types is that the size of the sensor is considerably bigger than a compact camera, this not only allows higher resolutions to be achieved, but also their low light performance will be better.

Yes they are more expensive to purchase initially, but given the improvement in performance compared to a similarly priced bridge camera or a high spec compact camera, I would have little hesitation in going for a DSLR if you are going to be serious about your photography. With a couple of interchangeable lenses say a wide angle zoom and a telephoto zoom you would be able to tackle most subjects. I tend to leave my wide angle zoom on the camera all of the time, it is used for more than 95% of my pictures.

There are some disadvantages to DSLR’s though… they are heavier and bulkier, so you should consider some form of camera bag to carry it around in, were as a compact camera will slip in to your jeans pocket and you will hardly notice it.

General comments
When choosing any camera don’t fall in to the trap of more programs is obviously better… look at your washing machine, how many programs has it got 15, 20, 25? How many do you use on a regular basis? It’s the same with cameras, you will have lots of different options available, yet a lot of them you will not know or remember how to use them without referring to the manual! I tend to leave my own camera on one particular mode, so when I need to grab it to take a picture I know that it will be ready and all I need to do is turn it on, raise it to my eye, compose the picture and press the shutter, time is sometimes of the essence when things are happening in front of you.

So ok I’ve explained the main differences, but you are still confused about how to choose a camera in the price range you are thinking of. But help is at hand; there are a number of review sites on the Internet, which have very comprehensive reviews of most of the latest models on the market.

Digital Photography Review is one of the best sites for camera reviews; they also include user reviews as well. Their own reviews run to several pages and include sample pictures in full resolution.

Digital Photography School has reviews and tips and tutorials well.

If possible before you buy your camera try to visit a store that stocks a range of cameras to see how your chosen make/model fits in to your hands. Unfortunately I only have good enough sight in my left eye, most cameras are designed for people that use their right eye to take pictures. One particular brand of camera I had researched in great detail, but when it came to using it, I just couldn’t get on with it when using my left eye to compose the picture, my head was covering some of the important controls on the back of the camera. So I tried out another brand and that was fine. So I’m not going to recommend specific makes and models, because you might have similar problems to me!

Once you have bought your camera, get to know it by taking plenty of pictures, go for a walk around your town and look for things big and small to photograph, the more you use your new camera the more familiar it will become and you will learn from your mistakes. If it’s a still subject, take your time, move around, what does the subject look like from different angles. Photograph them all and review your results critically when you get home.

The main thing is to enjoy taking pictures whatever camera you have. Email me if you have any specific questions I’ve not covered above.
